Blackwater Explorer - Madeira
Location: Remote Rio Madeira tributaries, Brazil Type: Boat
Our new "Blackwater Explorer" yacht was built to be one of the most
comfortable and attractive vessels sailing the Amazon basin. Roomy cabins with private bathrooms and individual air-conditioning provide all the comforts
of home. The spacious dining and lounge areas are furnished in beautiful Amazon hardwoods.
But even more importantly, she was designed for fishermen and built to fish. Her proportions were selected to maximize interior space while optimizing
maneuverability, letting us safely and easily penetrate into previously inaccessible headwaters streams. The yacht's unusually low draft allows her to
readily pass shallow sandbars and obstructions that would keep less efficiently designed boats back in port. The well organized debarkation deck and
waterline exit lets anglers get started on their fishing day quickly, without crowding, fuss or ladders to climb.
Our September and October trips operate in the Igapo Acu region in the Rio Madeira. Enclosed within a giant Indian reservation, this pristine region is an
exclusive sport fishery, closed to commercial fishing by negotiated agreement. Including four productive peacock bass rivers and a giant flooded forest, this
region boasts some of the most exciting fishing waters in the Amazon. The Blackwater Explorer, concentrating on the most productive waters, will cruise
throughout this immense, protected region, known for its great numbers of fish. As the dry season moves northward, so does the Explorer, heading for the Rio Negro basin.
In November and December, the yacht will fish the famous Rio Unini. The superlatives are extensive. Not only does the
Unini produce lots of trophies approaching world-record size, but the number of peacocks an angler can expect to
catch each day is among the best of any Rio Negro tributary. Although known for its big peacocks, the Unini is also
home to big hulking red-tailed catfish - up to 100 pounds! The river also holds gigantic pirarucu, feisty pescada, leaping aruana and several other sporting species.
As the Rio Negro basin's season winds down, the Explorer will follow the best water levels to tributaries and lake
systems of the Rio Branco. These exclusive fisheries produce superb numbers of peacocks, as well as plenty of fish into
the 20-pound class. Their relatively clear waters makes them great fly fisheries. This region produces excellent results until well into March.
